Ask The Mistress
Dear S,
Thanks for writing in!
What do you do when your bestie lives 8 states away from you?
First initial: S
State: IN
Having a best friend who is not local totally blows.
It’s known as the LDF (long distance friendship). And just like a long distance relationship- it can be hard and frustrating! I mean, don’t even get me started on different time-zones…

Remember though, there is a reason for the saying ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’. In relationships absence generally plays out in one of two ways: you’ll move on and forget about each other, or your friendship will grow stronger.
So how do you keep in touch and keep that bond strong? You are in luck! There are plenty of options these days!
Game night! Well- virtual game night. Hook up those webcams or use Google Video Chat and play your favorite games (drinking or sober) like you’re sitting across the coffee table from each other! And dude- you can even Google video Chat with more than one person so get all your far away besties to join in for a girls night!
Surprise your friend with a note or letter or small gift. Snail mail is not dead. It’s not free like email, but the smile on their face when they see your handwriting will always be worth it. I know I love seeing something in the mailbox that isn’t a bill.
Stalk them on social media- no seriously… stalk them– loudly. Text, FB, Instagram, Twitter, Voxer, Google hangouts, Skype and email the shit outta them.
Ultimately, nothing beats face-to-face time, so if you’ve got available time (and let’s be honest-money), why not pay them a surprise visit? Or schedule a trip together. Or invite them to come see you.
If you’re reading this and nodding your head and thinking of your best friend, you’re doing it right, and you’re both in for a wild, glorious, friendship-filled ride of a lifetime so don’t despair.
Friendship is well worth the effort because when you think about it; best friends are like siblings that don’t HAVE to love or even like you when they wake up the next day. It’s a choice they make. A commitment.
Even when you’re being an A-hole.
Very Truly Yours,
The Mistress
